After marveling at all the incredible artwork, we took a mini tour with Debby Coles-Dobay, the Public Art manager of the Boynton Beach Arts District. Downtown Boynton Beach is quite charming with its old historic buildings and playful new art displays; it gives the town so much character. Boynton has gained popularity for celebrating art in public places with its Avenue of the Arts and International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium. I admire their mission to integrate the arts within the community. Public art brings everyone together from all walks of life which promotes cultural interaction, education, and economic development.
As this cool and informative tour came to an end our stellar host, Judith, worked her magic and made special last minute arrangements for us to get a firsthand look at a turtle hatchling release at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. (Usually the wait list could take up to a year). I am a huge fan of the work they do here to support the South Florida coastal ecosystem such as the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility, where they nurse and provide medical care to injured sea turtles.
My love and admiration for turtles has taken on a whole new level! They are truly majestic creatures. Seeing the baby hatchlings voyage out to the vast ocean and into the unknown got me a little choked up. I thought about my sisters and our unique upbringing. (Mom tragically passed away when I was three. Dad, aka Superman, raised all four of us. When you are a product of single parent household you are naturally forced to grow up a little bit faster and fend for yourself). The hatchlings and their departure to sea symbolized a coming of age milestone for me; it was a moving and precious moment I will never forget.
I will post it in on my Instagram Highlights so you can view the bittersweet release!
Moments like these don’t come around often especially with your best friends so it’s definitely a magical experience that we can reflect back upon and smile at. In a sense it was like a metaphor to our lives and we were like the baby hatchlings venturing out into the world and riding the wave of life while simultaneously overcoming the many hurdles and obstacles on our journey.
We went back to our beautiful villas that night feeling so grateful and blessed to be able to do what we love and enjoy it together. It was really a pinch me moment!
The next morning we ventured out to Old School Square, a National Historic Site that is an award-winning arts center, in the heart of Delray Beach. This early 20th century campus has been beautifully restored in all its glory. You will never be bored here because there’s something for everyone. It has been serving the greater Delray Beach community and South Florida with visual and performing arts, and entertainment. Here you can enjoy performances, lectures, exhibits, concerts, classes, festivals, and so fourth. They also provide rental services if you need to plan a wedding, a private party, or a corporate function.
Next up on the agenda was the Norton Museum of Art.
If you know me, you know museums are my jam! This stunning museum houses some amazing artifacts and eclectic artwork ranging from American, Chinese, Contemporary, and European Art. They also have exciting community-centered programming such as Art after Dark where you can mix and mingle, enjoy live music, special lectures, attend workshops, and happy hour! Sweeeet!
I feel like the more I know, the less I know.
Be curious. The world is your classroom!
…Stay tuned for my final Diary 3, ya’ll. I feel like two posts will not do this place justice! I could go on forever about how fascinating Palm Beach is. 🙂
